Carlisle United's injury list has grown again with Josh Williams and Georgie Kelly the latest additions, as assistant head coach Louis Storey acknowledged the club's fitness problems. The club have suffered more setbacks than they would have liked since pre-season, even as their physical data shows an increase in intensity.

Junior Luamba, Toby Mullarkey, Elliot Embleton, Luke Armstrong, Harvey Macadam and Bevis Mugabi are all currently sidelined. Williams has a hamstring issue while Kelly is nursing a calf injury, further depleting the squad for head coach Rob Elliot.

Coaching staff response

Louis Storey confirmed the coaching staff are constantly assessing the balance between their demanding style and injury prevention. "We can't deny that we've had more injuries than we'd like," Storey said. He stated the team is happy with their physical output, which includes higher totals for distance, high-speed running and sprints compared to last season, but hopes the squad becomes more robust.

"It is something that we're constantly assessing," he added, believing the club can be proactive in reducing future issues.

Playing style and demands

Carlisle's aggressive approach out of possession, aimed at winning the ball higher up the pitch, correlates with their strong physical metrics. This high-intensity method, both in and out of possession, is a conscious tactical choice but carries a cost in player availability. The team sit 14th in the National League with 17 points from 13 games, having drawn their last match 0-0 with Kidderminster Harriers.

Their recent form reads two wins, one draw and two losses from the last five outings. They face a trip to 23rd-placed Solihull Moors on Saturday 24 October, a game where squad depth will be tested. Check the latest availability on the club's injuries page ahead of that match.
