Carlisle United need a dramatic improvement in results to achieve their promotion ambitions this season, new chief executive Tom Lawrence has stated. The club sits 14th in the National League with 17 points from 13 games, a position Lawrence acknowledges is far from their target.

Lawrence used an interview to defend the commitment of owners Tom and Patty Piatak, who are based in Florida. He said the family's passion for the club is unwavering and that they have made very significant investment on and off the pitch since taking over almost three years ago. "In terms of Tom and Patty and the wider family, their enthusiasm is unwavering," Lawrence said. He argued Carlisle are lucky to have owners who have upgraded infrastructure to a standard he believes is above the National League and in many cases at League One or Championship level.

Challenges mount under Elliot as wins remain scarce

The call for better results comes amid a difficult start for head coach Rob Elliot. He is the fourth person in charge since November 2023 and has overseen just four wins from his 13 games in charge. Carlisle have won none of their past four home matches, including a heavy 5-2 defeat to Woking at Brunton Park. Their recent form reads two wins, one draw and two losses from the last five, a sequence that includes a goalless draw with Kidderminster Harriers last time out. Promotion target requires near-impossible form surge

Last season's third-place finish and 95-point haul feels a long way off. To match that points total now, Carlisle would need 78 points from their remaining 33 games, an average of 2.37 points per game. They currently trail leaders Boreham Wood by 18 points. Lawrence said the objective is clear: to get out of the National League and ideally be competing at the top end of League One. "The performances have been a reasonable level, but we need to start winning more games because it's a results business," he stated. The club must create an environment where the football team can catch up with the off-field progress.

Lawrence, who replaced Nigel Clibbens as chief executive this summer after previously working at Southend United, emphasised the need for firm foundations. He pointed out that the club does not have the financial stresses seen at other clubs, allowing focus to remain on the pitch. The immediate task is to bridge the gap to the play-off places, a challenge that begins with a trip to 23rd-placed Solihull Moors on 24 October.
