Kenton Richardson is aiming to establish himself as one of the National League's best defenders after making his first start for Carlisle United. The 27-year-old, who joined from Gateshead in the summer, began the 2-1 FA Cup fourth qualifying round win over Tamworth and provided an assist. That result, a 2-1 victory on Saturday 17 October, was part of a recent run of three wins and a draw from their last five matches.
He had made two substitute appearances earlier in the season but was delayed by a minor injury. "I've had a bit of a frustrating time at the club, picking up a little injury," Richardson said. His long-awaited full debut saw him set up Regan Linney's headed second goal before being substituted after 55 minutes due to cramp.
Competition for places
His arrival adds to a crowded defensive unit at Brunton Park. Jack Ellis has been the preferred choice at right centre-back in recent league games, while Toby Mullarkey has now returned to fitness. Other options include Tom Anderson, Morgan Feeney, Brad Nicholson and the injured Bevis Mugabi. Richardson described the situation as healthy competition that pushes everyone to improve.
Setting the standard
His personal target is clear. He wants to be recognised among the division's elite defenders and to drive a winning mentality within the squad. Richardson emphasised the need for ruthlessness in both boxes to score goals and keep clean sheets. The team has scored 23 goals and conceded 20 this season, leaving them 18 points behind the league leaders. "I want to be one of the best defenders in the league. That's my aim," Richardson stated.
The team's form has been mixed but shows recent promise, with three wins and a draw in their last five outings across all competitions. That run includes league victories over Aldershot Town and AFC Fylde, following a 3-1 win at Aldershot Town on 3 October and a 2-0 victory at AFC Fylde on 29 September. It also featured a goalless draw with Kidderminster Harriers on 10 October, though was preceded by a 5-2 home defeat to Woking on 26 September and a 1-0 loss at Eastleigh on 19 September. Their next challenge is a trip to face 23rd-placed Solihull Moors on Saturday 24 October, a fixture that offers Richardson another chance to impress in a key National League encounter.
