Rob Elliot has dismissed any notion that Carlisle United's season is already off track, insisting his team must focus on immediate defensive improvements ahead of Saturday's home game against Woking. The Cumbrians sit 16th in the National League with ten points from nine games and are yet to keep a clean sheet this campaign.
Elliot stressed the need for a present-focused approach rather than worrying about long-term targets. "No, not at all. We're in September, and leagues are won in April and promotions gained in April and May," said the head coach. He added, "I think if we're looking that far ahead, we're not looking at the here and now and what we've got to do to get there."
Defensive frailties a concern
The team's recent form of one win, two draws and two losses has been undermined by defensive issues, particularly from set-pieces and on the break. Despite having enough bodies back in their own box, they conceded a goal on the counter in their last outing, a 1-0 defeat at Eastleigh. With a goal difference of zero after scoring 16 and conceding 14, tightening up at the back is the clear priority.
Squad reinforcements return
There is positive news on the injury front as key defenders Morgan Feeney and Brad Nicholson, along with forward Regan Linney, are expected to be available for selection against Woking. Their returns will provide a significant boost to Elliot's options. The availability of Junior Luamba will be assessed after the forward reported feeling 'a bit sore and tight' in training.
One player definitely missing is Micah Obiero, who is on international duty with Kenya for their AFCON qualifier against Eritrea. The team will hope to build on their last home result, a 1-1 draw with Forest Green Rovers, and secure a first win in five attempts.
Carlisle host 18th-placed Woking at Brunton Park on Saturday afternoon, a match Elliot sees as a prime opportunity to start climbing the table. The manager believes there are plenty of points still to play for and that better performances will lead to better results. A final decision on Luamba's involvement will be made following a late fitness test.
