Carlisle United manager Rob Elliot has said a win at National League leaders Boreham Wood this weekend would make people sit up and take notice. Speaking on Friday, Elliot stressed that the nature of his team's performance is just as important as the result itself.

United travel to face Luke Garrard's side at the Mangata Developments Stadium Meadow Park on Saturday afternoon. This is the first meeting between the clubs since Boreham Wood ended Carlisle's promotion hopes in last season's play-offs. The Blues are chasing their first away victory of the 2026/27 campaign against the early pacesetters.

Rob Elliot was clear about the potential impact of a positive result. "If you go to a team that's top of the league and win, I think everyone takes notice," the Carlisle boss said. He will have new midfielder Teddy Jenks available for selection for the first time. Elliot reflected on the opening day defeat to Worthing, describing it as "the most one-sided game I've ever been involved in," but noted performance can sometimes be misleading.

"You can be absolutely superb and lose, and it makes it seem worse than it is," Elliot explained. "At the same time you can be really poor and win and it covers up the cracks." He added that how the team approaches new challenges is important for everyone at the club.

Elliot faces a decision on whether to start new signing Teddy Jenks immediately or introduce him from the bench. The Blues are likely to be without defenders Toby Mullarkey and Kenton Richardson again, with no players expected back from injury in time for the trip south. Carlisle's current squad shows a mix of experience and new faces as they adapt to life back in the National League.

Despite scoring freely, they are the division's third-highest scorers, United are yet to keep a clean sheet this season. Elliot identified set-piece defending as a key area for improvement after conceding twice from second-phase situations in the 4-2 win over Scunthorpe. "Teams aren't scoring from the first contact, the goals have come from the second and third phase," he said. "It's just when the ball does drop down where we definitely need to improve and be a bit leaner."

Saturday's match pits the league's highest scorers against the third-highest. A positive result for Carlisle could provide a significant boost as they look to climb the standings from their current mid-table position. The Blues have shown attacking promise but consistency in results has been elusive in the early weeks.

The game is a quick turnaround from last season's painful playoff exit at the hands of the same opponent. Elliot's men will be keen to lay down a marker and prove they can compete with the best in the division.

Elliot highlighted the ongoing challenge of finding the right equilibrium in his team's approach. "It’s that counterbalance between leading people up the pitch, because we want to make sure we only have one attack to deal with, and getting secure and bringing people back," the head coach explained. He expressed confidence that his squad will find the right mix as the season progresses.

Improving defensive concentration in key moments, particularly from dead-ball situations, appears to be the immediate focus on the training ground. Elliot believes his side are defending the initial contact well but need to be more alert to rebounds and loose balls in the penalty area. Carlisle's next game after Boreham Wood is a home fixture against Dagenham & Redbridge on September 12th.
