Carlisle United midfielder Callum Whelan has called for an immediate improvement in effort and fight from his teammates after a poor start to the season. The 27-year-old made his first appearance since the opening day off the bench in Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Eastleigh, a result that leaves the club 16th in the National League with 10 points from nine games.

Whelan described the loss as the lowest point of the campaign so far and said the players must take responsibility. "I hope that was a blip on its own because that wasn't good enough," he told reporters. The defeat was Carlisle's fourth game without a win and left them only two points clear of the relegation places.

A blunt assessment

The returning midfielder offered a stark assessment of the team's performance, dismissing talk of tactics. "System, formation, I'm not really interested," Whelan said. "We didn't run harder than the opposition, we didn't fight harder, we lost too many duels." He expressed frustration with waiting for things to click, adding that the group must start winning games and performing better.

Carlisle, who were pre-season favourites for the title, now find themselves 13 points behind unbeaten leaders Boreham Wood. With nearly 20% of the season gone, the pressure is mounting. The team is still adjusting to new head coach Rob Elliot, but Whelan's comments underline a demand for basic application.

The immediate task is to respond at home to Woking this Saturday. Woking currently sit 18th, making it a key six-pointer near the bottom of the standings. Carlisle's recent form reads one win, two draws and two losses from their last five, a sequence that must improve quickly. The next fixture at Brunton Park on 26 September represents a clear opportunity to halt the slide.

Callum Whelan told reporters the 1-0 loss at Eastleigh was not good enough. "It's not what we pride ourselves on," the midfielder said. Carlisle, 16th with 10 points, have scored 16 and conceded 14 this season. Their recent form is one win, two draws and two losses from the last five games. They face Woking at Brunton Park on 26 September.
