Carlisle's MAN v FAT club has been named Community Club of the Year at the recent MAN v FAT Awards. The club was honoured for its heartfelt efforts to support a member whose wife was diagnosed with cancer. The awards ceremony, held at Villa Park in Birmingham and hosted by England World Cup legend Sir Geoff Hurst, celebrated clubs and individuals involved in the MAN v FAT programme across the UK and USA. The Carlisle team was recognised for organising a 48-mile fundraising walk in support of Glen Weidman, whose wife, Laura, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Club member Baz Cannon explained the reason behind the challenge. 'We chose to do a 48-mile walk because the rare cancer that Laura has, there are 48 cases a year diagnosed,' he said. The team managed to split the walk into stages, allowing less mobile members to participate. The club's commitment to supporting members both on and off the pitch has highlighted the wider impact the programme can have on improving wellbeing and building strong, supportive communities.
