Carlisle United midfielder Stephen Wearne has launched a new podcast with a former Sunderland teammate. The 25-year-old is co-hosting 'Athlete and Human' with Denver Hume, a defender who retired this summer.
Wearne and Hume announced the project on social media this week. "Excited to share something new we’ve been working on," they said. "A podcast about professional sport, but more importantly, the people behind it."
Podcast focus
The pair aim to share personal stories and bring on guests to discuss various aspects of a sporting life. "We’ll be sharing our own experiences and bringing on guests along the way to talk about the highs, setbacks, pressure, funny moments and everything that comes with life in sport," they added. Specific episode details are still to be revealed.
Shared history
Wearne and Hume played together for Sunderland's Under-21 side before their careers diverged. Wearne made three first-team appearances for the Black Cats, with his debut coming in the EFL Trophy in 2021. He later had permanent moves to Grimsby Town, Gateshead, and MK Dons before joining Carlisle United in January 2025. Since arriving at Brunton Park, he has made 65 appearances and scored six goals.
Hume, 28, made 84 appearances for Sunderland before spells with Portsmouth, Grimsby Town, and Fleetwood Town. His career ended ten months after suffering a bleed on the brain in a training ground injury.
Current context
Wearne's off-field venture comes as Carlisle sit 15th in the National League with 10 points from eight games. Their recent form reads DDLWD, with the latest result a 1-1 draw against Forest Green Rovers last weekend. The team's next challenge is an away trip to face 14th-placed Eastleigh on Saturday.
The midfielder will be looking to add to his goal tally when the season resumes, with his current total for the club standing at six from his 65 outings. The squad's full details are available on the official squad list.
