Mark Hughes is being considered for the managerial vacancy at National League rivals Forest Green Rovers. The former Carlisle United boss, who left Brunton Park by mutual agreement in May, has emerged as a contender to replace Robbie Savage.
Hughes, 62, managed Carlisle from February 2025 until their relegation to the National League last season. He has a prior working relationship with Forest Green's sporting director Mark Bowen. The club has not confirmed if Savage was offered the job before his departure was announced.
Carlisle's Current Campaign
Carlisle's focus remains on their own National League campaign, where they sit 14th with 16 points from 12 games. Their recent form shows a two-game winning run, including a 3-1 victory at Aldershot Town last weekend.
The club suffered play-off semi-final heartbreak against Boreham Wood last term, finishing third. Their next challenge is a home fixture against eighth-placed Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday. View the full fixtures list for the season ahead.
Hughes has endured personal tragedy this year with the sudden death of his 38-year-old son Alex. The manager said he was "totally heartbroken" by the loss. His potential move to Forest Green would see him take charge of a direct league rival to his former club. Carlisle's squad, which you can review here, prepares for its next match at Brunton Park.
