Former Carlisle United striker Nacho Novo has announced the tragic death of his 26-year-old stepson, Ross. The 47-year-old, who now manages Scottish club Darvel, shared the devastating news in an emotional social media post this week.
Novo wrote that his family was 'absolutely broken' by the loss. "Nothing in my life could have prepared me for this post," he said. The former forward asked for privacy for his family, including his ex-wife Donna, who is Ross's mother, during this time.
Darvel FC, where Novo has been in charge since last November, expressed its devastation. The club said its thoughts were with Novo and his family and echoed the request for privacy.
Nacho Novo made six appearances for Carlisle United during the 2013/14 League One season as part of a varied career. He is best known for a six-year spell at Rangers and also played for Dundee, Greenock Morton, and clubs in Spain, Poland, the United States, and Northern Ireland.
Messages of sympathy have been sent from across the football community, including from former team-mates. The news comes as Carlisle, where Novo once played, continue their National League campaign. The team drew 1-1 with Forest Green on Tuesday and currently sit 14th in the table with 10 points from eight games.
Novo concluded his tribute by writing, 'Forever in our hearts my boy.'
