Carlisle United were held to a 2-2 draw by Southend United in a frenetic National League clash at Brunton Park. The result extends Carlisle's recent form to two wins, two draws and one defeat from their last five outings.
Rob Elliot's side made three changes from their previous match, with Jack Hartigan, Tobi Oyebade and Joe Goodliffe all coming into the starting eleven. The game began with Southend on the front foot, but Carlisle grew into the contest and created a significant chance when Hartigan's free-kick found Oyebade, whose header was well saved by visiting goalkeeper Desbois.
The deadlock was broken in the second half. Southend's Chambers-Parillon, who has now scored four goals in his last seven games, found the net. The forward appeared to suffer cramp after scoring but was able to continue. Carlisle responded swiftly, with Kelly equalising to make it 1-1. The Blues then took the lead through a second goal, but Carlisle showed resilience to level the scores again at 2-2.
Manager sees yellow
Carlisle boss Rob Elliot was shown a yellow card during a tense second half. Southend's Cardwell was also booked for a challenge on goalkeeper Harry Lewis. The match saw a flurry of substitutions from both sides as they searched for a winner. Carlisle introduced Luamba for Williams, Linney and Galvin for Bunker and Duru, and later brought on Wearne and Obiero for Jenks and Ajiboye.
Zavier Massiah-Edwards entered the fray down the right flank, while Promise Omochere also came on for the visitors. Omochere almost capitalised on a poor backpass but was denied. At the other end, Obiero saw a late effort sail over the bar, and Duncan held onto a flick from a Southend corner. The final whistle confirmed a share of the spoils in front of a crowd of 7,126, which included 386 travelling Southend supporters.
League context
The point leaves Carlisle 14th in the National League, having taken eight points from their opening six fixtures. Their goal difference stands at plus three, having scored 13 and conceded 10. They remain eight points behind early leaders Boreham Wood, who defeated them 2-1 last time out.
Chris Phillips of the Southend Echo reported the final score, stating, "A share of the spoils for Southend United." He also confirmed Kelly's equaliser with, "GOAL. Carlisle 2, Southend 2. Kelly." The team's schedule does not get easier, with a look at the upcoming fixtures showing a busy period ahead. Carlisle's next match is scheduled for Saturday, 19 September.
